Milkweed and Monarchs Garden Stone

Butterflies require these salts and minerals to breed and Bees use it to cure their honey. Just leave this high-fire stoneware outside where it will be exposed to rain, and preferably, near plants for Butterflies to gather nectar from. It isn’t a lure, so it won’t pull them away from flowers, but it is a wonderful addition to your garden. As long as it is allowed to dry out between rains, it will accumulate a film of salt and minerals that the butterfly will land on and uncurl their little proboscis to take in these minerals. Also, in the cold winter months, if you see bees out trying to find pollen or nectar, pour some sugar water over it to help them through the winter months. In Florida, we have a non-migrating population of Monarchs and they will benefit from sugar water during the winter months.

I work with local Monarch Butterflies in my neighborhood. I bring in baby caterpillars and protect them from natural predators until they are safely flying Monarchs. This takes about a month from egg to Butterfly with a LOT of milkweed for the caterpillars in between! (Each caterpillar eats around 16 leaves, or one milkweed plant).
