Milkweed and Monarch Puddler

Perfect gift for your gardener and butterfly gardener! Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas are the times to give the bestest gifts and giving a Puddler will make you shine!

This represents the lifeforce of the Monarch’s, the Milkweed plant.  We always encourage everyone to plant more and more Milkweed to support these winged beauties that are near extinction.  This Puddler has one Monarch and a colorful divet for a pop of Pollinator attracting colors.

Butterflies require these salts and minerals to breed and Bees use it to cure their honey. Just leave this high-fire stoneware outside where it will be exposed to rain, and preferably, near plants for Butterflies to gather nectar from. It isn’t a lure, so it won’t pull them away from flowers, but it is a wonderful addition to your garden. As long as it is allowed to dry out between rains, (put a few pebbles under it to make it dry out faster), it will accumulate a film of salt and minerals that the butterfly will land on and uncurl their little proboscis to take in these minerals. For more speedy results, pour some saltwater, ideally, Himalayan salt water, over the Puddler to get it salted. Also, in the cold winter months, if you see bees out trying to find pollen or nectar, pour some sugar water over it to help them through the winter months. In Florida, we have a non-migrating population of Monarchs and they will benefit from sugar water during the winter months.

All Puddlers come with instructions. Butterfly & Bee Puddlers are self-maintaining. These are high fired pieces that can be showcased in all weather, indoor & outdoor.

*some competitors send a small packet of salt or sand (that washes away at the first few drops of rain) with the Puddlers they make. We do not because the clay acts as a slow sponge to absorb the rain then dry out leaving a natural residue of salts and minerals. The colorful designs and bright divet colors attract the butterflies and other Pollinators.

I work with local Monarch Butterflies in my neighborhood. I bring in baby caterpillars and protect them from natural predators until they are safely flying Monarchs. This takes about a month from egg to Butterfly with a LOT of milkweed for the caterpillars in between! (Each caterpillar eats around 16 leaves, or one milkweed plant). (Their population has declined 90%, and are slowly starting to increase their numbers with people across the country providing Milkweed and Way Stations for migrating Monarchs).
